Christmas… New Year’s… It’s a Pair..
Just like Oysters and Sparkling Libations at celebratory reflective hopeful times of the year.
Uncle Ron more than suggests, he advises don’t drown your oyster in hot sauce or that seafood dip that is often with shrimp rings…. Try them "au naturel". Then sip a little of the wines below…. Next try sprinkling a little of the wine on the oysters….. peace and joy throughout the land and sea.
The oysters are: The Ruisseau from Eel Lake Oyster Farm; Medium Standards from Bay Enterprises in Malagash and Standards from Tracadie Bay on PEI….
The sparklings are:
Tideview Cider: Sparkling Pear... A blend of Anjou, Flemish Beauty and bosc Pears with Heirloom apple added for character.
Jost Vinyards: Muscat Prost... made with the New York Muscat grape variety grown extensively in Nova Scotia.
Luckett Vineyards: Helena... Fortified black currant liqueur and traditionally-made Annapolis Valley sparkling cider (the label suggests paring with oyster)

A Few Notes on the 2012's Rankings.......
There are some neat things in the scores and different ways to look at them. It is a “preference” scoring and not a qualitative scoring. It is a reflection of time, place, journet, spirit, soul, loch, stock and barrel.
So Legendario and Black Strap tied for #1. While Legendario has a higher average score per person scoring, more people voted for Black Strap. Maybe people were talking about Blackstrap more. The preference scale is strange the Cruzan Single Barrel is a good example. It scored 35th with only 7 people sampling while in 2010 It was 22nd out of 43. It’s a great rum. Another example of Chaos are the Brugals… Uncle Ron’s first night in 2003 Brugal was #1. Sometimes they finish high and sometimes low. I think a lot depends on people talking and things like how it is lined up, easy to reach, what they just sampled, ate, had a bad hair day or whatever.
First timer Brugal 1888 finished very well (top 10) in between Goslings, Family Reserve and Ron Zacapa 23. When looking at the measurement of how empty the bottles were 1888 was 9th (see Uncle Ron's Academy' Facebook Page). There are some inconsistencies in this measure as well. The Cuban white rum Galeon was in the empty “flight” of rum but only 7 people sampled it. It’s empty because people were using it for Mojito mix (proper thing). It did score high (13th out of 37). It is a good rum but I would guess the high average score is partly due to biased as a few people knew what it was and they love Cuba (rightfully so) Another example of how "empty the bottle was" as being a good indicator (but with flaws) is Negrita Rhum’s empty bottle placing of 11th. It is only 2 spots from 1888 and ahead of wonderful rums like PYRAT and R.L. Seales. But it scored 25th. I would guess that the reason for it’s emptiness is people taking “hey try that one”. They do this for shock ( both rum they loved or did not). Negrita is not what one would call a sipping rhum…. So they don’t even score it they just pour it. Uncle Ron want's to have some again.
It is a fun and funny night. For instance some people scored the same rum twice and always with a different score. "What if" questions could be asked as well if more people had of voted for Millonario 3 or Zafra (say the same number of votes as sampled the Black Strap) who knows how the placings would have turned out. I have no doubt some people were sampling the Black Strap repeatedly and not scoring… proper thing! The fun of the night is people talking it up and suggesting rums and having fun.
This could be said for any Rum specially one like Zafra or Sailor Jerry and Cruzan 9. When I sampled Zafra I had no doubt Uncle Ron needed it for the “Night” and I thought it would have done better.
What about Pyrat? Why did it finish so low? It was only sampled by 8 people? Why was that? It has been top 5 a few times.
Bottom of the keg: It is a great night of laughing, sipping, sampling… nothing is ever the same .. it changes like Rum in the Barrel and we’ll do it again and again and again….
Heads up on Uncle Ron’s Night 2013. We are going to have a champion of champion’s night. We will only feature the top rums (we’ll go to a 2nd place rum from a year where a rum repeated for #1 ) from the last 9 years. It will be a great night. We’ll have other rums but they won’t be part of the tasting, maybe we’ll get a “mixoligist” in to do some creations. I think the Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Tawwassen, Wallace, St. Andrew's, Santo Domingo, Dusseldorf campus' should have a night as well....
We’ll also do it as a fund raiser for Cuban Hurricane Relief efforts. For information on how to contribute to the rebuilding efforts in Cuba go to the Nova Scotia Cuba Association's Blog.
(The rums that will be featured in Uncle Ron’s Night 2013 are:
2003: Anejo Ron Superior Brugal
2004: El Dorado 12
2005: We have lost this year’s scores but I think it was Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 anos production
2006: Gosling’s Black Seal
2007: Cruzan Black Strap
2008: Goslings Family Reserve (Cruzan Black Strap was #1 so we will default to #2)
2009: ZAYA 12 year old Gran Reserva
2010: Legendario Elixir de Cuba 7
2011 Punta Cana Ron Muy Veijo (from the DR and will be difficult to source.)
2012: Millonario Solera 15 YO Peru (Cruzan Black and Legendario tied for #1 but are previous winners)

In Nova Scotia wine country, tipple a little Tidal Bay
From the Globe and Mail and one of Uncle Ron's Favorites (Dean Jobb) a story on another favorite: Nova Scotia Wine.
On a sun-dappled patio surrounded by orderly rows of grapevines, Swiss banker-turned-winery owner Hanspeter Stutz raises a glass of honey-golden wine. “We have one of the hottest spots in the valley,” he says of his 12-hectare vineyard. BRUGAL to the Power of Three.....
Some people bring canned sun or sand figurines from the Dominican Republic… others bring back Brugal!!! First up is what http://www.mynslc.com/ features… Brugal Ron Anejo. Chip’s Rum Howler Blog’s is in a nice place. The next arrival via Mexico and a member of the Dartmouth Campus is Brugal Ron Extra Viejo Reserva….. The reviews do not say exactly “Ron Extra Viejo Reserva” so lets go with the review from Robert Burr of the Examiner.com.

They are bringing the world to us including Brugal.. Next year they hope to launch BRUGAL 1888 Gran Reserva Familiar…. See what Dave has to say of R n D Rum Reviews… will you be able to pick it out!!!!!
Brugal was the number one rum at the first Uncle Ron's Night.... check out the score page.

Today’s Uncle Ron’s Cellar is brought to you by the letter “M”
We have been looking for Old Monk since it was enjoyed in 2010. This Old Monk Very Old Vatted XXX Rum was found at Beacon Hill Wine and Spirits on Charles Street in Boston (thanks to the Back Bay Black Out). Here is a company history and a review by Nicholas Krieger of the Huston Spirits Examiner.
All the way from Cayo Coco via the St. Andrew’s Campus is another favorite brand: Ron Mulata. The academy has enjoyed Solera and Anejo but now we have for the first time Anejo 7 Anos. Here is a little info on Ron Mulata. Not a lot of reviews out there but here is more info on Ron Mulata.

et directe de la France : Rhum Agricole
Just arrived are two new first timers for Uncle Ron’s library. They were found in Paris and are distilled in the French-speaking rum-producing countries from sugarcane juice. This method is known as "Rhum Agricole," so that it is differentiated from "Rhum Industriel," which is made from molasses.
So we have Damoiseau Rhum Vieux Agricole 5 Ans d’age from Guadeloupe. Here is a neat little blurb on its character and family of rums. Also arrived is the “The most politically incorrect rum in the market” Rhum Negrita Bardinet, known as the aroma rum. A little blurb on it (and many other rums) from Weimax Wines and Spirits.
The Damoiseau Rhum was found at a wonderful wine and spirit store called Nicolas on Boul. Saint Michel in Paris, great service and great location…

Calgary Dark Oil Dark Rum
Calgary is a mighty fine town. In fact Uncle Ron thinks Calgary and Boston are amoung the best places to discover rum…. Look what just arrived… Bundaberg Red Extra Smooth. Other than the Bundy web site there are not really any reviews.. so check this out.. could be a new dynamic at Uncle Ron’s Night. Next all the way from Peru ron Millonario Sistema Solera 15 Reserva Especial. According to their web site it is a ““damn quaffable, very moreish” drink”. Not many reviews but here is a short one from Scotland Stephenson (they have a good intro on tasting rum). Jamaica, the home of many many fine rums… check out the hand blown bottle from Venice. Edwin Charley Proprietor Collection The virtue Luxury Jamaica Rum. This collection is a series but again hard to find a good review. Here is a blurb from a wine site. The Jamaica Gleaner tells a little story. The same distillery that produces Appleton’s produces this product.

Cuba ha llegado por segunda vez...................
Uncle Ron is pleased to announce two new arrivals from Cuba! Ron Caney Anejo Centuria and Ron Varadero Anejo 7 Anos. Part of the challenge is to find reviews on some of the Cuban Rons. Here is a little blurb on both. We should start getting two at a time and forming our own reviews. Here is a neat history on Ron Caney and a video. A little history of Ron Varadero can be found here. I will hav to ask the blog keepers for help as I am having an awful time getting the pics to be right sdie up.

Happy April's Fool DAy ( we're not fooling here)
The Boston States…. Maritimes…. Much has moved between those two places for generations including rum…. Look what Uncle Ron has in his cellar: A couple from craft brewers: Privateer (batch two) from Essex Country, Mass. Not any reviews from our regular reviewers but The Passionate Foodie wrote a nice piece on his blog. It should be mentioned that in looking at many “foodie blogs” that after attending an event at the Distillery that many were converted to be rum sippers and not mixers…
Next up is Hurricane Rum all the way from Triple Eight Distillery in Nantucket. Again not easy to find a review but The Drink Hacker has a few words….
Finally on the same trip of discovery (Uncle Ron asked that we thank John at the InterContinental’s Rumba in Boston and for the tastings Bauer’s Wine and Spirits for doing a special order for us) we have Ron Barcelo’s Dorado all the way from the D.R. I can’t find a review for the Dorado. If you see one send it along….

RUM RUNNING
CBC TV's Land and Sea is going to air a documentary on Rum Running In the 1920's and 30's - many sailors in Nova Scotia did the unthinkable - they stopped fishing and became international smugglers.
They took liquor into the United States during Prohibition. This episode tells the dramatic story of Rum Running.
By the way the pic above is of the I'm Alone which I think will be discussed in the Documentary.. however what they don't know is that it's the main sail from the I'm Alone that is part of Uncle Ron's Logo...

Wine lovers may get to BYOB out of province | The Chronicle Herald
Wine lovers may get to BYOB out of province The Chronicle Herald
OTTAWA — Wine lovers can rejoice that they may soon be able to leave the province with their drink of choice. Beer lovers, not so much.
Thanks to a federal law still on the books from 1928, it is illegal to ship liquor to another province or even take it with you as you cross a provincial border.
Crafted in the rum-runner era, the Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act was designed to control the flow of alcohol by barring its passage between provinces unless it was through government-sanctioned channels
