What is Uncle Ron's Academy?

Uncle Ron’s Academy is a happy dynamically fluid crew who gather in various sized groups, committees, gatherings, celebrations enjoying visits with or just hanging around Uncle Ron.

Who is Uncle Ron? Uncle Ron is a "spirit". However, the Academy should say that it was a "aha" sort or moment when we realized that the "Ron" in Ron Carioca or Ron Zacapa Centenario was not a primero nombre but Rum! So when we gather it’s more of a family adventure valuing all those great things like life, love, learning. It is more than a night out on the town... So, we are Uncle Ron’s Academy....

This blog spot will feature all sorts of things like rum, music, feasts, literature, dancing, links to other rum sites, events, adventurers and one of the great causes we support: Los Primos Project

Upcoming Happenings

Roncipient of the 2011 Uncle Ron Reads Award Announced

Pictured above is Stephen Kimber (2nd from Left) with His partner Dona Rona Jeanie and Don Rons: Jeff, Theo and Mario.

Uncle Ron is getting ready for a winter of reading… And what book is he hoping to find under the tree? A book by Stephen Kimber, the Roncipient of the 2011 Uncle Ron Reads Award.
Stephen Kimber, a Professor of Journalism at the University of King's College in Halifax, is an award-winning writer, editor and broadcaster. He is the author of one novel -- Reparations (Harper Collins, 2006) -- and eight non-fiction books.
Stephen has also completed a book entitled What Lies Across the Water about the story of five Cuban intelligence agents sentenced to lengthy prison terms in the United States for infiltrating Miami exile groups plotting terrorist attacks against Cuba. Made With Love Mixology.... And the Winner is....

As we all know Sailor Jerry is a crew mate of Uncle Ron…. So he is excited to hear that at the  MadeWithLove Mixology event the winner used Sailor Jerry and Nova Scotia Honey Crisp apples to please the palate.  Not only that but the winning Mixologist  is connected to the Academy in a typical maritime way…. One degree of separation.  Check out Uncle Ron’s Blog for more on the event……
The Bicycle Thief’s Jeff Van Horne was the Judge’s Panel winner with his Sailor Jerry 3 Way creation. He served Sailor Jerry spiced rum with a Nova Scotia Honeycrisp apple shrub, caramel foam and ginger syrup. For more on the story check out The Restaurant News ….

Uncle Ron has a suggestion for next year's Oyster Cloister

While Uncle Ron is very happy with this year's invited oysters he read an article in the Halifax Chronicle Herald and said HEY GET THOSE FOR NEXT YEAR.....

Oyster farmers make first million

After moving home to years of planning and preparation, Trevor and Michelle Munroe have turned his Eastern Shore dream into a reality
TREVOR MUNROE is obviously quite a smooth talker, having persuaded his wife to move from Halifax to “10 min-utes past Sheet Harbour" so they could start an oyster farm.
“I did not want to live down there, and I didn’t know anything about oysters," Michelle Munroe said.
“But we learned a lot."............ to see the article click here....

Donald Craig played key role in N.S. winemaking

From Chronicle Herald:
Donald Craig, who passed away peacefully on Oct. 1, 2011, was renowned nationally and internationally for his berry and ornamental research as a scientist at the Kentville agricultural research station.
Less well understood was the pivotal role he played in the foundation of the Nova Scotia wine industry.

Uncle Ron’s Oyster Cloister Orders

The phone lines have carried Uncle Ron’s wishes and the little jems are being raised out of the Maritime’s water as we type…. The tongs are prodding around the shallows, the boats are bringing in the cages… they are being graded and packed and oh boy some quahaugs and bay scallops too….
Here is where they are from:

Lonnie Langille’ lease on bend where Lazy Bay becomes Wallace Harbour… Not only oyster’s but quahaugs as well.
From The Elliott’s are my grandfather’s favorites from the Wallace Bay cradled Birch Island.

Tom Wood who fishes out of the boats he builds is bringing us some Fox Harbour’s

Merigomish’s Phillip Docker is bringing us his Shandaph Oyster and Bay Scallops

Malagash’s own Bay Enterprises…. Charles and Nancy Purdy’s are sending some Thrum Caps

From Ell Lake all the way down in Pubnico’s Nolan D’eon’s  Ruisseau Oysters

And from Nequac NB Amedee Savoie’s much loved Masion Beausoleil Oysters.
Finally of course in a hands across the water sort of touch  Ted Boutilier has selected some Salutation Cove(PEI) and Caribou (NS)

Here are a few sites with some tasting notes…

Uncle Ron's Swagger

Hey check out the new tee shirt on Uncle Ron's Swagger page

Yours for $25 with $5 from each sale going to Los Primos.

Uncle Ron's Night 2011 Observations and Opinions (results)....

The 8th Annual Uncle Ron’s Night was a libation sensation/comestible digestible.. And a favorite has been singled out... The Academy should mention that this is a "preference" rating. The only judging process is sip and savour or sip and spit! Either way they are all RICO and all have their "applications", seasons and place....

Special thanks to Cruzan and Stayner’s Wharf for supporting Los Primos and Uncle Ron’s Night. Uncle Ron also asked that the faculty be thanked for organizing a fun fun fun night. As well the travelers who sought out and delivered the wondrous vessels of joy!!!!

Uncle Ron want’s to remind the Academy that the night is a neat pure, straight up, high ball of one, two and three finger fun.... It is not a scientific method nor is it’s method madness. People sample, talk, suggest, all night long. During the night preference changes and judgement becomes a balance between observation and opinion clouds and sun with fluid factors facilitating. The pallet refresher was Northern Spy apples from Barbour’s Farm in Malagash... recipes from the night will be posted... The nibbles were simply amazing..........................

Some observations... The top four are unique and according to the numbers stand alone... The number one preference of the night is first timer from the D.R: Punta Cana Ron Muy Viejo... Mucho Gracias Regis... Cruzan Black Strap is Number two and Goslings Family Reserve is number three. Black Strap has been number one twice and Gosling’s has been number one and been in the top three countless times... PYRAT is forth place ( PYRAT has been 2nd the last two years).

Next there are some interesting groupings.. 5,6,7 and 8th place are separated by four points. Ninth to twelfth is a three point spread... Some of these have been top three and always been in the top 12....
13, 14,15 and 16 are are spooning two pointedly.. One of which is from Nova Scotia’s Ironworks Distillery in Lunenburg which was right beside the number one rum in 2005, Ron Zacapa 15 yo.
The message Uncle Ron would like to remind the academy is that if one more person remembered to leave their tasting sheet it could change everything.... If one person sampled # 14 first instead of #22 the results could be different... If somebody had Kibbe after rather than before sampling number 20 it would be different....... They are all "good dear good".
For the results of 2011 Uncle Ron’s Night to Uncle Ron’s Night Scoring Page.

Flagship Rum and Favorite Berth

CRUZAN con STAYNERS WHARF son NUESTROS AMIGOS.

The Academy is thrilled to proclaim that Cruzan Rum is the flagship rum for Uncle Ron’s Academy. The Faculty and Students do recognize that there are as many wonderful rums as there are rums..... But because of the support CRUZAN has provided the Academy with we are as happy as frosh during frosh week to proclaim CRUZAN as our flagship rum.
This year three CRUZAN rums are featured at Uncle Ron’s Night: Black Strap, Single Barrel and 9( spiced).

Likewise while there are many many wonderfully grand places to dine, listen to tunes, and sample rum because of the support Stayner’s Wharf has offered the Academy’s curriculum (Los Primos) ... The Academy is pleased to proclaim Stayners Wharf as one of our favorite "classrooms".

The Nova Scotian Crystal Glass Runneth Over .... and were not talking about rain

Never mind the rain... Look who has floated in over the last week!!!! Some winners and top finishers from years gone by and two frosh ... here's the list: Tres Cruzan Hermano!!! Just wait till you taste the newest in the  CRUZAN family: CRUZAN 9 Spiced Rum. Check out the reviews for Black Strap, Single Barrel and Roger and Dave's review on CRUZAN 9 Spiced.
