What is Uncle Ron's Academy?

Uncle Ron’s Academy is a happy dynamically fluid crew who gather in various sized groups, committees, gatherings, celebrations enjoying visits with or just hanging around Uncle Ron.

Who is Uncle Ron? Uncle Ron is a "spirit". However, the Academy should say that it was a "aha" sort or moment when we realized that the "Ron" in Ron Carioca or Ron Zacapa Centenario was not a primero nombre but Rum! So when we gather it’s more of a family adventure valuing all those great things like life, love, learning. It is more than a night out on the town... So, we are Uncle Ron’s Academy....

This blog spot will feature all sorts of things like rum, music, feasts, literature, dancing, links to other rum sites, events, adventurers and one of the great causes we support: Los Primos Project

Upcoming Happenings

Uncle Ron's Night Scoring

The scoring system (see below) is reflective of a really fun Uncle Ron’s Night. When we were putting together the Uncle Ron’s Rum page we found ourselves someplace between intrigue and interest when reading different rum reviews and seeing how they scaled scoring. A few Dartmouth Academy members are endeavoring to brew  a new scoring system..

While we never have met a rum we didn’t want to invite home, to Uncle Ron’s Night or have as a committee's agenda item our scores below would indicate some rum is better than others. So some sort of a disclaimer would be a prudent thing. Many of the people who come and taste are sort of newbies... so a rich molasses Cruzan Black Strap scores high with many first timers.. So on a scale of 1 to 10 if 10 people give one rum  a 10 it kind of scews the scores of the more aged.

There are some truths through... quite often rums that were sourced from out of province and scored high have shown up here and are popular.... like in 2009 the top five were all from out of province and it took those rums to beat Cruzan Black Strap and be ahead of perennial favorites like Goslings, Flor de Cana, Bacardi, el Dorada and Appleton’s. Three of 2009's are now available in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick (Sailor Jerry, N.S., N.B.; Zaya, now at Premier Wine and Spirits and Pyrat OX Reserve in N.B.

Since 2004 we have always had a double blind and they generally score close together (except Don Ron Al who scored last year's both with a "0" and an "10".....

Bottom line is rum is “some good”. Many can be savored on their own, sipped with a bit of water, enjoyed over ice, be the crowing glory in world wide recipes or with just plain coke.

Rums have a history, a story and they adapt to thier surroundings... they are sort of liquid curry. Maybe we should use the scale that Harry Bruce refers to in his book Down Home ... Notes of a Maritime Son: Good.....Some good...... Right some good..... Right some Jesus good!!...

Because our scoring system does not tell all truths the Academy felt an obligation to all the creators of Rum, Ron, Rhum, मोया so we put links to various blogs and web pages on Uncle Ron’s Rum page to ministers, reviewers, afficionados, tasters, sippers of rum.

Below are the scores and a copy of a score sheet (some just "tick" it some write comments)...... I should add 2005's are missing.. go figure!
