What is Uncle Ron's Academy?

Uncle Ron’s Academy is a happy dynamically fluid crew who gather in various sized groups, committees, gatherings, celebrations enjoying visits with or just hanging around Uncle Ron.

Who is Uncle Ron? Uncle Ron is a "spirit". However, the Academy should say that it was a "aha" sort or moment when we realized that the "Ron" in Ron Carioca or Ron Zacapa Centenario was not a primero nombre but Rum! So when we gather it’s more of a family adventure valuing all those great things like life, love, learning. It is more than a night out on the town... So, we are Uncle Ron’s Academy....

This blog spot will feature all sorts of things like rum, music, feasts, literature, dancing, links to other rum sites, events, adventurers and one of the great causes we support: Los Primos Project

Upcoming Happenings

Rankings 2013… the 10th anniversary The Final Tally

It is/was quite a night… the number one rum from each of the last ten years. In 2003 the line up was Brugal, El Dorado, Havana Club, The Captain ( Morgan), Parrot Bay, Barcardi Cicion, Casa Dorada, Lemon Hart, Matusalem, Caribbean Club 7, four Square, Bacardi.  the most every sampled was in 2011 when there was 43 from all over the world… The Academy is thankful to those who adventured far and wide to return with Uncle Ron’s spawn ( gotta be a better word for that) year after year.

So the rankings for the 10th URN (too bad that acronym did not spell “keg”). It was fun hanging with Don Ron and Rona’s Brian, John, Kay, Wendy, Dave, Ruth, Nels, Theo, Anna, Bill ( via phone), Marilyn, Mark, when preparing for the night and recording the results… comments like: Is something weighted unfairly if it is numbered Number #1? Does the numerical order make a difference( if people sample according to the number of the bottle? What if they just had Drysdale’s Pepperoni or Keith’s Chicken jerky? There are a lot of variables. We’ll have to do it again!

It is a night of preference. We do evaluate although it could be said while there is restraint there are no controls. And surprises, Zaya resting in #6, Gosling’s Family Reserve answering to Black Seal! And how about that Cruzan Black Strap right up there with rums that are  two to three times it’s cost (could be a good time for a theme to understand Economics 101, the difference between cost and Value).

The Campus' in Edmonton, Dartmouth, Tsawwassen and Calgary discussed the scoring being ranked by average score or total score... it was agreed to post the vote according to the over all average score... Click on the pic below to see the whole ranking results.....

Below are links of the Rum Ranking above to web pages and reviews by Uncle Ron’ s Friends. For the rankings since 2003 go to Uncle Ron’s Night Scoring Page…………………

We’ll post some pics of and videos of the night and other adventures… Join Uncle Ron’s Academy on Facebook follow us on youtube and when we figure out the twitter thing Uncle Ron has saved a twitter account and more.

A Spanish Treasure

Uncle Ron would like to share news about a treasure from Pamplona Spain that is available in Canada: Baines Pacharan Classico. It goes back to the Middle Ages. The name Patxaran comes from the Basque baso aran, meaning wild plum; Pacharan is the Spanish (Castillian) spelling. It is commonly drunk in the Basque region and the rest of Spain. It is a liqueur made from blackthorn, or sloe, berries. It was served at royal weddings and was used for medicinal purposes by a queen of Navarra. Today, the Pacharan production is strictly regulated by the government, to ensure its quality.

Licores Baines is a prestigious company founded in 1844 by the Matossi family, Italian-Swiss emigrants to Pamplona and has been producing high quality Pacharan for over 150 Years. A powerful, intense red, this liqueur is fruit-forward and sweet with a light undertone of anise. It is soft and velvety on the palate and is best served slightly chilled.

Today, the family business continues to focus on, a laborious production method which gives the final product remarkable levels of flavour, colour and smoothness.

Banies’ digestif tonic, Pacharan is distilled in a small batches using quality ingredients including macerated anise and sloe berries, with a hint of coffee and chicory. Mix over ice with a bit of fruit and soft drink or with orange juice as suggested by the video. ( check out the video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvE1IlkKDvU&feature=youtu.be

TWINS

Don Ron Lance refers to them as twins ( they are bundled). The rum representing Uncle Ron’s night 2012 Ron Millonario 15 Solera Reserva Especial

From Peru but sourced via Calgary and muled in via Tantallon and Dal’s parking lot… at it’s first appearance in 2012 it actually placed 2nd to Cruzan Black Strap and Cuba’s Legendario (who tied for 1st). Because they are repeat winners Ron Millonario get’s the nog …. With special thanks to don ron’s Lance and Mike…

Seeing we sourced it from Alberta we should check out Chip’s ( the Rum Howler) review. And how fitting for something that will be enjoyed in Nova Scotia, as Chip reports that it is made in “old Scottish column stills”. For a 2nd opinion let’s see our friends at Liquorature

Rums left to source for Uncle Ron's Night 2013 are all available in Province of Nova Scotia: Anejo Ron Superior Brugal (2003), El Dorado 12 (2004), Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 anos (2005), Gosling’s Black Seal (2006), Cruzan Black Strap (2007),  Goslings Family Reserve( 2008).

Two Islands…. Two Rums…… Two Announcements…..

We do not want to sound like a government that is in power making a number of announcements about the same program….. We’re talking about a journey of Rum here very similar to the global value chain established in the 18th century…. potatoes for rum in this case

Delivered today from the D.R via PEI the Number one rum from 2011 for Tío ron de noche 2013…. Sourced and Hand Delivered by a tag team of the faculty from the D.R P.E.I : Punta Cana Ron Muy Viejo It is still hard to find a review on Punta Cana Ron Muy Viejo but here is a blurb by the Rumelier on Oliver and Oliver the producer….
